Whenever I offer a husk cherry (aka “ground cherry”) to someone they all do the same thing: 1. Examine the paper lantern husk and ask what it is 2. Take a bite and say WOW! I LOVE husk cherries. I only had the pleasure of trying them about 3 years ago and I’ve been growing them ever since. They are related to the tomatillo, but are smaller and sweeter. At the less ripe stage, the fruit is slightly green and the flavor is tart but still sweet. At full ripeness the husk is papery and brown. The fruit inside is orange and it has a delicious sweetness mixed with the flavor of a homemade pie crust or croissant. I’ll be putting out free samples at the farmstand this afternoon! Today, a Brooklyn-raised neighbor said my lactofermented kosher dill pickles were awesome! 😊😊😊 For the record, yes I grew the cucumbers and dill, and yes I made them myself! There’s absolutely no vinegar in these, just salt brine, a proliferation of probiotic bacteria, and deliciousness! Keep them refrigerated and in brine and you are good to go! Millenia-old food preservation. And you realize why salt was once more valuable than that useless shiny metal stuff. 🧐 #fermentedfoods #gutmicrobiome #guthealth #dillpickle #fermentation
